Health care coverage and benefits vary, are often a source of confusion, and can be quite a hassle. Luckily, having a better understanding of commonly used terminology will not only reduce frustration but will also ensure you’re maximizing the experience of your care.
Terms you’re likely to hear are deductible, co-payment, co-insurance, and out-of-pocket. But what does it all mean?
Deductible: A specified amount of money the insured must pay before an insurance
company will pay any portion of the claim
Co-payment: A fixed amount of money paid by the insured, at the time of service, in
addition to the portion the insurance company is responsible for
Co-insurance: Percentage of the treatment cost the insured is responsible for
Out-Of-Pocket: The most you will have to pay for covered medical expenses in plan
year. Once met, the insurance company will pay 100% of the allowed
