Breast Cancer: Raise Your Pulse, Reduce Your Risk

This past month was filled with shades of pink galore, and fundraisers in every city and every town.  For what? October is also known as breast cancer awareness month. A month for us to reflect on family members, friends, or acquaintances who have had breast cancer. It’s a devastating blow to the body, finances, and emotions.

This should be a month of joy, of raising awareness and of walkers! Susan G. Komen is an organization that sets up a walk for a cure in various cities throughout the year. On their site it states that in 2017 alone, there will be 252,710 new cases of invasive form of this decease together with 40,610 deaths. There must be more than just overwhelming statistics.

Individuals I’ve met volunteering at the event in Seattle, have even taken flights to get to the nearest walk. Their enthusiasm and passion to find a cure is truly moving. You may ask why walk?

The American Cancer Society states the 2.5 hours of physical activity a week is extremely beneficial in lowering one’s risk for cancer. It doesn’t even have to be intense exercise! Walking 30 minutes a day, can lower cancer risk by 3%.

The science? High estrogen levels in women increase at breast cancer. When someone is active however, estrogen levels are lowered. Exercise can also help with the immune system. A heightened immune system means a better opportunity to slow or kill cancer cells. Read more about physical activity and breast cancer risk here.

By walking together, in great tutus, sporting pink in every fashion, men and women everywhere get to break the silence of breast cancer. Here at Lilly Physical Therapy, we greatly value exercise for its whole body miracles. Any walk, activity, or 5k to support a cause is a humbling, enjoyable experience that everyone should do at least once in their lives.
